O periódico católico pelotense “A Palavra”: aspectos sobre a Igreja Católica e a educação nas primeiras décadas do século XX
Resumo
Desde o século XIX e, fundamentalmente, nas primeiras décadas do século XX, a Igreja Católica combatia a laicização e a secularização e, por extensão, todos os movimentos político-sociais e culturais que defendessem essas idéias. Nesse contexto, a Igreja, em Pelotas, preocupou-se com as atividades clericais e aquelas voltadas para a educação, ligadas à propagação da “boa imprensa” (cujo principal veículo era o periódico A Palavra), à criação de estabelecimentos de ensino que atendessem a várias camadas da sociedade e à criação de agremiações políticas que faziam frente a certos segmentos da sociedade que ofereciam resistência à sua atuação.

AbstractSince the nineteenth century, and fundamentally in the first decades of the twentieth century, the Catholic Church fought the secularization and also the political, social and cultural movements that advocated this idea. In this context, the Church in Pelotas was concerned about the clerical activities and those related to education, linked to the propagation of the “good press” (which the main vehicle was the periodical “A Palavra”), to the creation of schools opened to various society classes and to the creation of political societies that faced certain society segments and that offered resistance to its performance.
