ABSTRACT
With the purpose to study the effect of different dosages of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as probiotic on the performance of scargots gros gris (Helix aspersa maxima), were used a total of 1300 escargots from this sort of specie, divided into groups and submitted to the same, controlled, conditions of temperature and humidity. The animals were subjected to different dosages per Kg of feeding : 0 g; 0.1 g; 0.2 g; 0.4 g; 0.5 g; 1 g; 1.5 g and 2.0 g of probiotic. S. cerevisiae sample was supplied by Brazil SAF Company and corroborated by laboratorial tests. A source of calcium (oyster flour) and water were also supplied. The surveys were carried out at Escargot do Brazil Company, at Heliciculture Laboratory in Biology College and at Pathogenic and Environmental Yeasts Laboratory at Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The animals were sacrificed at the moment they reached the weight of 10 g, being evaluated in regard to the consumption of calcium and feeding intake, mortality rate and time period for reaching weight around 10 g. A mean weight gain for treatment using 0.1 g and 0.4 g of yeast per Kg of feeding has showed to be useful as probiotic for escargots gros gris.
