OS TEXTOS LITERÁRIOS ANTIGOS E O HISTORIADOR: DESAFIOS E ABORDAGENS

Ao abordar os textos literários e paraliterários da Antiguidade Clássica, o historiador se vê diante de um duplo desafio. Primeiramente, a língua original em que foram escritos representa um obstáculo não negligenciável e só parcialmente transponível por meio de uma tradução. Em segundo lugar, não menos importante é situar o texto estudado dentro de um quadro de gêneros e épocas literárias, que servem como balizamentos que ajudam a compreender os documentos dentro de seu contexto estético de produção. O objetivo deste artigo é discutir as noções de gênero e época literária, propor um panorama da literatura, a partir dessas grades teóricas e ressaltar como textos pertencentes a gêneros diferentes merecem interpretações e valorações específicas. 

ABSTRACT: 

When approaching literary and paraliterary texts in Classical Antiquity, the historian faces a double challenge. First, the language in which they were originally written represents a non-negligible obstacle, which one can only partially overcome by means of a translation. Second, and no less important, to place the text in a grid of genres and literary epochs, which work as landmarks helping to understand each document in its aesthetical context of production. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the notions of genre and literary epoch, to propose a general view of the ancient literary system and to indicate how texts related to different genres must have different interpretation and evaluation.
