Abstract: Critical perspectives on modern Spanish and Portuguese colonialism have contributed to rethinking colonial times, identities and contexts, questioning the notions of change and the essentialist approaches that have traditionally prevailed in the field of Historical Archaeology. However, the study of modern colonialism has often been geographically focused on the territories that had been under colonial domination. This paper contributes to critical perspectives on colonialism by analyzing the relationship between insular narratives -disconnecting European and colonial realms- and Historical and Postmedieval Archaeological practices in Iberoamerica and the Iberian Peninsula, respectively. This raises the possibility of applying concepts linked to modern colonialism beyond Latin America.
