ABSTRACT
The oat grain production on the basis on yield per unit area only is no longer sufficient to fulfill the market needs as the importance of grain quality increased significantly. For the purpose of commercialization, the industrial yield of the grains is a key factor. The oat processing industry looks for well-developed, big, heavy and uniform grains. The purpose of this work was to study the components of the oat panicle aiming at to identify the characteristics that can improve the grain yield and quality. The genotypes UPF 16, UFRGS 16 and UFRGS 19 were used in the study. The grains of each spikelet were sorted out as primary, secondary and tertiary grains. The number of panicles m-2, of grains panicle-1, grain weight, and yield varied significantly among cultivars. The cultivar UFRGS 16 showed the highest grain yield, as a result of having the highest number of panicles m-2 and grains panicle-1. The cultivar UFRGS 19 showed the highest grain weight but the yield was low due to its low number of panicles m-2. The cultivar UPF 16 showed excellent performance because of its highest proportion of weight composed by primary grains and high number of grains panicle-1 and, contrary to the other cultivars, had no tertiary grain. In conclusion, cultivars of white oat with high proportion of primary and secondary grain might show increased yield and high quality of grains as long as a high number of panicles per m-2 are maintained.
